Cities all over the world are clamouring to become true Smart Cities, harnessing technological advances to deliver improved services and enhanced lifestyle experiences.
One successful example is Gelsenkirchen in Germany which wanted to converge key data from city operations and management systems, so managers could respond intelligently to a variety of governance, livelihood, and business needs. However, there are issues in other areas.
For instance, in Canada on Toronto’s Eastern waterfront, a new digital city is being built by Sidewalk Labs – a firm owned by Google’s parent Alphabet.
It is hoped the project will become a model for 21st-Century urbanism.
But the deal has been controversial, representing one of biggest ever tie-ups between a city and a large corporation.
